I have great news, y’all! I am getting a promotion and a raise at work! The best part? This is the first time that I successfully negotiated a raise. Granted, it was a small increase over what was originally offered, but it’s still a win in my book.
Two years ago, I accepted what was offered by my employers and thanked them. Never even thought to question them. Six months ago, my boss shot me down as soon as I asked for an increase, and I backed down. I figured that a promotion was enough. In the months that followed, I realized how cowardly I was. I vowed to myself to not give up so easily in the future. I knew my worth as an employee, and I knew they knew my worth. I needed to do it for me. For my future. For my family. And on behalf of all women. Did you know that approximately 57% of women have never negotiated a raise? I couldn’t let myself be a part of that 57% anymore.
So when my boss played hardball yesterday, I refused to back down. I was polite, but firm. I knew they needed me. And it worked. My boss called me today and we came to an agreement. Success! You guys don’t know how proud I am of myself. We all have our own personal milestones, and this was one of my big ones. You know the saying “good things come to those who wait”? That’s true... but sometimes great things come to those who ask for it. So go for it!
